After Christ's victorious resurrection, and shortly before his glorious ascension, he said to his Apostles, ' Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost ; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you : and lo ! I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.' Math. 28, 19, 20. Every command owes its importance to the dignity and authority of the person from whom it originates. The command of a dignified monarch is much regarded, because it proceeds from a great authority : whereas, the command of a beggar would have but little influence. But whose command is baptism ? It is neither the command of a beggar, nor of a temporal king–but of the King of kings, and Lord of lords ; of incarnate Jehovah. Hence its infinite importance.
