2. When the Israelites were wounded by the serpents, Moses was commanded to make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole ; and they that looked upon it, lived. See Numbers, 21, 6–9. How simple a cure–the mere looking on a brazen serpent ! This of itself could not have proved so effectual, if God had not with it connected his influence. Is the water in baptism more simple than the brazen serpent ? Could the dying be cured by the view of a serpent, why may God not also connect life and salvation with baptism ?
